Application of Leeb Hardness Tester Test in Industrial Production


Ⅰ. The source of Leeb hardness tester


As is known to all, in the industrial production and scientific research, to realize the strength of metal materials or mechanical parts, wear resistance, machinability and other performance, hardness is often tested. Because of all the mechanical properties, hardness testing is the simplest and the most rapidly, and only little damage to the workpiece test method, is suitable for batch process and finished goods inspection of the parts, so it can be widely applied.


The Leeb hardness test is a new dynamic hardness testing method, which was proposed by D•Leeb of Switzerland in 1978.


The Leeb hardness tester designed and manufactured according to its test principle is the most widely used and advanced dynamic hardness testing instrument in the contemporary world in the past ten years. It has the characteristics of the most convenient to carry, the simplest operation, the fastest test and the most widely used.


So it plays an important role in all walks of life. In particular, the method transforms the traditional damage detection into a new nondestructive detection.


Ⅱ. The application of the Leeb hardness tester in industrial production


As soon as the Leeb method was put forward, it became a great breakthrough in hardness testing technology and was rapidly popularized in Europe, America and all over the world.


In 1988, Chinese company introduced the Leeb hardness tester which integrates signal taking, data processing, hardness automatic conversion, direction random correction, and has opened up a new situation of microcomputer and automation of portable hardness tester, set off the "hot" of Leeb hardness tester in the world, and promoted its rapid development


In the industrial production, it solves the hardness testing problem of many large parts and components which are not easy or disassembled, In particular, the main engine of the Leeb hardness tester and the impact device (or probe) are connected with a long flexible wire. It can test parts in all directions, which no other durometer can.


It can be imagined that the use of a time only the size of a calculator Leeb hardness tester, can quickly determine the hardness values of various materials in the field without damaging the tested equipment, and at the same time obtain different hardness values that can be obtained by using a variety of traditional hardness tester, its advantages are obvious.  


But with industrial production, the vast majority of plotted on a product design, process, or finished goods inspection rules are commonly used in brinell, rockwell, vickers and shore hardness. Therefore, hardness conversion must occur when the Leeb hardness tester is used to detect components. However, the conversion will inevitably produce conversion error again, combined with the Leeb hardness being related to the elastic modulus of a metal material or workpiece. Therefore, it is complicated to apply to the production of all walks of life, and it needs continuous exploration and improvement to enhance its vitality.


The conversion error of Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers and other hardness should be reduced to the lowest degree, and gradually develop from general conversion table to industrial conversion table, and then to special conversion table. The design and test of large parts of the Leeb hardness will be an innovation of physical and chemical testing, which may take several decades and generations.
