Types of Coating Thickness Gauges and Standardized Operation for Measuring Film Thickness

Coating thickness gauges (also known as film thickness gauges, thickness gauge meters, etc.) are magnetic and non-magnetic dual-purpose instruments with a wide range of applications.

The eddy current coating thickness gauge of Mikrometry Instrument Limited conforms to the national standard and can measure the thickness of coating quickly, non-destructively and accurately.

It can be used not only in precision measurement laboratories, but also in engineering sites, and can be widely used in manufacturing, metal processing industry, chemical industry, quality inspection, paint and coating industry, used car paint identification, etc. It is a necessary professional instrument to damage the sample to be measured.

Ⅰ. There are three types of coating thickness gauges

1. Fe quality probe (iron base), can detect all non-magnetic coating thickness, such as paint on steel, iron, powder coating, plastic, porcelain, chrome, copper, zinc, etc.

2. NFe quality probe (aluminum base), the elecoat coating thickness gauge detects the thickness of all insulating coatings, such as paint, plastic, porcelain, etc. These coatings must be applied to non-magnetic metal substrates such as aluminum, copper, brass or stainless steel.

3. Fe, NFe quality probe (iron-aluminum double base), can detect the coating thickness that Fe and NFe quality probe can detect at the same time.

Ⅱ. What is the purpose of the coating thickness instrument?

The steel structure anti-corrosion coating is mainly made of paint materials, and special projects may use rubber, plastic and other materials. The judgment of the anti-corrosion effect is generally based on the coating thickness as the main indicator. The thickness detection of the anti-corrosion coating should be carried out after the coating is dry, and there should be no condensation on the surface of the components during the detection.

If there is a quality problem in the appearance of the coating of the component before the inspection, it should be repaired, and the thickness of the coating should be checked with a coating thickness gauge after the repair.

Ⅲ. Coating thickness gauge coating thickness testing specification

The basic steps of eddy current thickness measurement include pretreatment, instrument calibration, testing and result evaluation.

Sample pretreatment: ensure that the surface of the test sample is clean and tidy, and meets the required roughness, curvature, etc.

Calibration instrument: Before the coating thickness gauge is tested, it needs to perform zero-point calibration and multi-point calibration.

Detection: When measuring, quickly touch the probe vertically with the test surface, and lightly press the probe positioning sleeve, the screen will display the coating thickness measurement value.

Evaluation of results: In the selected sample area, at least five points are measured using a coating thickness gauge; their average values are calculated respectively, accurate to 0.5mm.
